De Ouvido/By Ear
This book came from an initial desire to transcribe my caixa (snare drum) part so as not to forget it upon my return to the US. It was also born out of my appreciation for the equitable teaching methods in Brazilian samba schools.
As the abstract states, De Ouvido is a bilingual and integrative record of rhythm and music, specifically samba school Rosas de Ouro’s compositions for 2024 Carnaval in São Paulo. This book analyzes the culture and techniques of performance and pedagogy in the sphere of samba and Carnaval, providing an interdisciplinary overview of Rosas’ Carnaval parade, including sheet music, scores, lyrics written analysis, original illustrations, photographs, and images. De Ouvido seeks to highlight the creativity of rhythmic communication, while also archiving some of the music written for Carnaval, serving as a manual for all who are interested in the genre.
